how could a tiny chinese hybrid rice seed help people in nearly 70 countries in asia, africa, americas and the south pacific to reduce hunger and poverty and achieve development? the answer is china's assistance under the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind. in 1973, chinese researchers represented by yuan longping solved the technical difficulties of hybrid rice successfully. in 1979, chinese hybrid rice was taken abroad. half a century goes by, chinese hybrid rice has become a famous name card of china's international aid. china has also strengthened agricultural cooperation with more than 140 countries and regions, set up agricultural demonstration centers, carried out agricultural personnel training and provided a large amount of food aid.

international forum on hybrid rice assistance and global food security co-sponsored by china international development cooperation agency, ministry of agriculture and rural affairs and national food and strategic reserves administration was held in beijing on nov 12th. chinese president xi jinping delivered a written speech to the forum. important leaders, diplomatic envoys and heads of international organizations from laos, burundi, zimbabwe, sri lanka, cuba, solomon island, kiribati and other countries and regions attended the conference online and offline. all participants highly appreciated china's agricultural technical assistance and warmly responded to building a community with a shared future for mankind and global development initiative.

“i wish to express deep appreciation to the people’s republic of china for their efforts taken on behalf of who are affected by the food security. such forum go a long way to enhance efforts towards food security through coordinated action.”dinesh gunawardana, prime minister of sri lanka said. “i wish to recall from the speech made by my father philip gunawardana, as the minister of agriculture and food, at the 4th fao regional meeting for asia and the far east held in 1959 in tokyo, i quote, ‘china is the biggest producer of rice in the world, fao should have china as a full member. ’today, china's hybrid rice has not only eliminated hunger in china, but also helped asian, african and latin american countries achieve food self-sufficiency.”

“china’s hybrid rice assistance has become a symbol of china’s foreign aid, featured as a sincere result-oriented affinity and good faith relationship.”cited by manasseh sogavare, prime minister of solomon island. he noted that, rice import amounts to around 45% of the country’s food import, hence ,it is a single most important commodity of concern, “i hereby express the strong interest of the solomon island government on hybrid rice cooperation with china to achieve self-efficiency, positive effect on our local economy and enhance employment.”

wanbao agricultural park in mozambique started to build in july, 2011 and is one of the key projects of china-mozambique cooperation in production capacity. maria gustava, ambassador of mozambique to china, introduced at the forum that wanbao project has planted 20,000 hectares of hybrid rice in southern mozambique, and the output per hectare has increased from 1.5 to 8 tons. local people are looking forward to promoting more wanbao projects in mozambique. "mozambique will be committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation with china in the fields of agriculture and food security and consolidating and deepening the global strategic cooperative partnership between mozambique and china," she said.

a theme photo exhibition designed by center of international cooperation service, ministry of agriculture and rural affairs was also displayed at the forum. the photo exhibition contains four sections: hybrid rice in china, china's great efforts to "secure the rice bowl", china's agricultural aid to foreign countries to help world food security, and china's joint efforts to build a community with a shared future for mankind.

nothing can separate people with common goals and ideals, not even mountains and seas. confronted with current complex international situation, china will continue working with other countries to strengthen cooperation on food security and poverty reduction, and make greater contribution to accelerating the implementation of the un 2030 agenda for sustainable development and building a world free from hunger and poverty.
